TEAM BUYING OUT A PLAYER Teams are permitted to buyout a players contract to obtain a reduced salary cap hit over a period of twice the remaining length of the contract. The buyout amount is a function of the players age at the time of the buyout, and are as follows:1/3 of the remaining contract value, if the player is younger than 26 at the time of the buyout-2/3 of the remaining contract value, if the player is 26 or older at the time of the buyout-As explained above, the buyout is spread out over a period of twice the remaining length of the contract. The team still takes a caphit, and the caphit by year is calculated as follows:Multiply the remaining salary (excluding signing bonuses) by the buyout amount (as determined by age) to obtain the total buyout cost-Spread the total buyout cost evenly over twice the remaining contract years-Determine the savings by subtracting the annual buyout cost from Step 2. by the players salary (excluding signing bonuses)-Determine the remaining caphit by subtracting the savings from Step 3. by the players Annual Average Salary (AAV) (including signing bonuses)-The above calculation is performed for each year of the buyout, meaning the buyout caphit is not necessarily the same for each year. It is also possible that the buyout caphit can be negative, meaning the team receives a credit.Buyout Period-The buyout period begins the later of June 15 or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends. It concludes on June 30 at 5pm ET.For the 2021 off-season, the buyout period begins 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends. It concludes on July 27 at 5pm ET.Compliance Buyout-During the buyout periods in 2013 and 2014, teams were permitted two compliance buyouts (also known as amnesty buyouts). The formula above is applied to determine the monetary amount paid to the player; however, they do not count against the cap.Compliance buyouts were only permitted to be executed on a contract that was entered into on or before Sept. 15, 2012. They were also permitted to be performed on a 35-plus contract.For one season following a compliance buyout, players were not permitted to rejoin the team which performed the buyout (this restriction does not exist for normal buyouts).Waivers-A player can only be bought out after clearing unconditional waivers. A waiver-claim by another team pre-empts the buyout process. If a player has a no-movement clause, the player can reject the option of waivers and proceed to the buyout process.35-plus Contracts-A buyout of a 35+ contract that is two years in length or longer and: 1. Has a signing bonus in the 2nd or later year, OR-2. Is front-loaded-Will not benefit from a reduced cap hit.The cap hit will remain structured as it was before the buyout. The benefit of a 35+ contract buyout with no cap hit reduction is that the player that the player will not count towards their 23 roster limit, and the salary owed to the player is reduced by 1/3-Signing Bonus-Signing bonuses are paid to the player regardless of a buyout. Therefore, as explained in the buyout caphit formula above, signing bonuses are excluded in the equation when determining the total buyout cost, and are included in the AAV value when determining the remaining caphit.Signing bonuses therefore decrease the buyout caphit savings. In the case of players with significant signing bonuses, such as David Clarkson, the remaining caphit decreases minimally. Due to this, Clarkson's contract has been referred to as a buyout-proof contract.Buyouts Outside of the Regular Period-Clubs whom have 1 or more arbitration filings may be permitted to perform a buyout outside of the regular window. This gives teams another opportunity to become cap compliant following an arbitration case.Clubs are permitted to perform a buyout outside the regular period during the 48 hour period beginning on the third day after the final of [CBA 13(c)ii]:Settlement of the Club's final arbitration case, or-Receipt of the Club's last arbitration award-Requirements:A buyout can only be performed on a player who was on the clubs reserve list at 3:00pm on the most recent trade deadline-The player must have a cap hit of at least $4,000,000 for the 2023 offseason-There is an exception to this buyout period (CBA Reference: Section 11.18; 12.3) if the arbitation was Club-elected (as opposed to player-elected) and the player did not receive a qualifying offer. In this case, a minimum of two arbitration cases are necessary to trigger the buy-out period outside the regular window.

The O’Brien Trophy — also known as the
O’Brien Cup — was first given out to the National Hockey Association
champions from 1910 to 1917. It was named after Ambrose O’Brien, who
founded the NHA. Back then, the Stanley Cup wasn’t owned by any league; a
team had to be champions in their own league before they could
challenge for the Stanley Cup. Thus, many teams that won the O’Brien
Trophy also went on to win the Stanley Cup.
When the NHA disbanded, the O’Brien
Trophy was awarded to the NHL playoff champions. Once the NHL assumed
control of the Stanley Cup, making that their ultimate prize, the
purpose of the O’Brien Trophy shifted. First, it was given to the best
team in the Canadian Division, while the American Division winners would
get the Prince of Wales Trophy. But for a 12-year span from 1938-39 to
1949-50, the O’Brien Trophy was given to the runner-up in the Stanley
Cup Finals; that is, to the team that lost the Stanley Cup. After that, the NHL retired the trophy.

Officially known as the — (deep breath)
— MBNA/MasterCard Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award, this trophy was
given out from 1999-2000 to 2006-07. It was named after former NHL
goaltender Roger Crozier, who played in the NHL from 1964 to 1977, then
later worked for MBNA from 1983 until his death in 1996. But, of course,
it was also named after MBNA. Do you see a trend here? The award came
with a $25,000 prize that the winner could donate to the youth program
of his choice.

Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award (List of Winners)
The Saving Grace Award is awarded to the Goaltender who has the best Save Percentage in the National Hockey League. To be qualified for this award, a goaltender must have played in at least 25 games.
The award was presented to the NHL in 1989-90 by Bud Ice to recognize the league leader in plus-minus statistics. Plus-minus
statistics are calculated by giving a players a "plus" when on-ice for
an even-strength or shorthanded goal scored by his team. He receives a
"minus" when on-ice for an even strength or shorthanded goal scored by
the opposing team. A plus-minus award has been presented annually since
the 1982-83 season.The trophy has been sponsored by a number of
different companies over the years. The sponsoring companies have
included Emery Worldwide (Emery Edge Trophy), Alka-Seltzer (Alka-Seltzer
Trophy) and Anheuser-Busch Inc (Bud Ice Trophy, Bud Light Trophy).

Given To: The player that has the highest plus/minus rating. The winner must have played at least 60 games in the season to qualify.
Plus/minus is probably the
most-criticized “old school” hockey statistic. Maybe that’s why the NHL
Plus/Minus Award was retired after 2008. Either that, or they couldn’t
get a brand of beer to slap their name on it.This award has changed names and
appearances over the years. When it was first introduced, it was called
the Emery Edge Award, which sounds awesome. It had no real name for the
1988-89 season, but then was renamed the Alka-Seltzer Plus Award, then
the Bud Ice Plus-Minus Award and then finally the Bud Light Plus-Minus
Award.Should the NHL re-introduce this award, I
would hope that they would again call it the Emery Edge Award, which
might be named after a sponsor, but sounds much cooler than the Immodium
AD Plus-Minus Award or the Toyota Corolla Plus-Minus Trophy, or some
other ridiculous, mile-long sponsorship name.

about the sponsor than the award itself, the Scotiabank/NHL Fan Fav
Award — yes, “Fav” and not “Favorite” — was an award where fans got to
vote for their favorite current player. Not surprisingly, Roberto Luongo
won the award in its first, last and only year.
Description: First awarded in 2008, the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award is presented “to an individual whose long-term contributions to hockey have been representative of all that is outstanding about the National Hockey League and the game, both on and off the ice.” Most Recent Winner: Montreal Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau was the most recent recipient of the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2009. Beliveau won the Stanley Cup 10 times as a player with the Canadiens, and seven more as an executive, meaning his name has been inscribed on the trophy an unprecedented 17 times. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1955-56 and 1963-64, the Art Ross Trophy in 1955-56, and the inaugural Conn Smythe Trophy in 1964-65. Beliveau also appeared in 13 All-Star Games during a playing career that spanned from 1950-71. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 after the mandatory three-year waiting period was waived.

Lester Patrick Trophy (complete history) The Lester Patrick Trophy is awarded for an individual's contribution to hockey in the United States. It is awarded by the National Hockey League and USA Hockey.
The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893.Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England during the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for the trophy he donated has become one of the world's most prestigious sporting competitions.Beginning with the 1926-27 season, the Stanley Cup has been awarded to the NHL's playoff champion.

NHL Vezina Trophy Winners-Award honors best goaltenders; first presented in 1927
The Vezina Trophy is an annual award given "to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at this position" as voted by the general managers of all NHL clubs.Leo Dandurand, Louis Letourneau, and Joe Cattarinich, former owners of the Montreal Canadiens, presented the trophy to the League in 1926-27 in memory of Canadiens goaltender Georges Vezina, who collapsed during an NHL game Nov. 28, 1925, and died of tuberculosis a few months later.Through the 1980-81 season, the Vezina was awarded to the goaltender(s) who played a minimum of 25 games for the team allowing the fewest goals during the regular season. In 1981-82, Billy Smith of the New York Islanders was named the first winner of the Vezina under the current system.Jacques Plante holds the record for most times winning the Vezina Trophy with seven, one more than Bill Durnan and Dominik Hasek. However, Hasek has won the most times under the current system of honoring the best individual goalie.Canadiens goaltenders have won the Vezina 29 times, the most of any team. Under the original definition, there were occasionally multiple winners from the same team in the same season. In 1973-74, Tony Esposito of the Chicago Blackhawks and Bernie Parent of the Philadelphia Flyers shared the award when their teams finished tied for the fewest goals against; it's the only time there was a tie between players from different teams.The voting is conducted at the end of the regular season; each individual voter ranks the top three candidates on a 5-3-1 points system. Three finalists are named and the trophy is handed out at the NHL Awards after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Ted Lindsay Award (formerly the Lester B. Pearson Award) is presented annually to the "most outstanding player" in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players' Association.The award honors Hockey Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay, an all-star forward known for his skill, tenacity and leadership, as well as for his role in establishing the original Players' Association. It was first awarded in 1972.Wayne Gretzky won the award five times during his career, the most of any player. Members of the Edmonton Oilers have won the award 11 times, the most of any team. The Pittsburgh Penguins are second with 10.The Lindsay Award is considered to be the companion of the Hart Memorial Trophy; 16 players have won them in the same season: Guy Lafleur, Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mark Messier, Brett Hull, Sergei Fedorov, Eric Lindros, Dominik Hasek, Jaromir Jagr, Joe Sakic, Martin St. Louis, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.Of those 16, Lafleur, Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, St. Louis, Crosby, Ovechkin and McDavid also won the Art Ross Trophy in the same season.

NHL Prince of Wales Trophy Winners-First awarded in 1924, presented to Eastern Conference playoff winner since 1994
His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, donated the trophy to the NHL in 1924. From 1927-28 through 1937-38, it was presented to the team finishing first in the American Division. (The team finishing first in the Canadian Division received the O'Brien Trophy during these years.)-From 1938-39, when the NHL reverted to one division, to 1966-67, the Prince of Wales Trophy was presented to the team that won the regular-season championship. After expansion in 1967-68, it again became a divisional trophy and was awarded to the regular-season champion of the East Division through the end of the 1973-74 season. Beginning in 1974-75, it was awarded to the regular-season winner of the conference bearing the name of the trophy.From 1981-82 through 1992-93, the trophy was presented to the playoff champion in the Wales Conference. Since 1993-94, it has been presented to the playoff champion in the Eastern Conference.

The Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award has been awarded since 2006-07. It is given "to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season."Suggestions for nominees are solicited from fans, clubs and NHL personnel, but the selection of the three finalists and the ultimate winner is made by Messier, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and one of the finest leaders in NHL history. The six-time Stanley Cup champion is one of three players to have been captain of three teams (Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks) and is the only player in NHL history to be captain of two teams that won the Stanley Cup (Oilers in 1990; Rangers in 1994).No player has won the award more than once.

NHL Lady Byng Memorial Trophy Winners-Award presented annually since 1925 for combination of skill, sportsmanship
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability." The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season; each voter ranks his top five candidates on a 10-7-5-3-1 points system. Three finalists are named and the trophy is presented at the NHL Awards after the Stanley Cup Playoffs.Lady Byng, wife of Canada's governor general at the time, presented the Lady Byng Trophy in 1925. She decided the first winner would be Frank Nighbor of the Ottawa Senators. Late in the season, Lady Byng invited Nighbor to Rideau Hall, showed him the trophy and asked him if the NHL would accept it as an award for its most gentlemanly player. When Nighbor said he thought it would, Lady Byng, much to Nighbor's surprise, awarded him the trophy.After Frank Boucher of the New York Rangers won the award seven times in eight seasons from 1927-28 through 1934-35, he was given the trophy to keep. Lady Byng donated a replacement in 1936. After her death in 1949, the NHL presented a new trophy and changed the name to the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.In addition to Boucher, several players have won the award multiple times -- including Wayne Gretzky (five), Red Kelly and Pavel Datsyuk (four), and Bobby Bauer, Alex Delvecchio, Mike Bossy, Ron Francis and Martin St. Louis (three). The Rangers and Detroit Red Wings have won the award more often than any other team -- 14 times. The Toronto Maple Leafs are next with nine, the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins are tied with eight and the Los Angeles Kings are next with six.No goaltender has won the award; Bill Quackenbush (1949, Red Wings), Kelly (1941, 1953, 1954 Red Wings; also won as forward in 1961 with the Maple Leafs) and Brian Campbell (2012, Florida Panthers) are the only defensemen to do so.
